Condition

The panel is bevelled on all four sides and is uncradled. It is stable and flat. There are some tiny knocks around all edges, and a small knock upper left. The paint surface is in overall good condition. All the delicate details in the foliage, buildings and moving figures of the background are well-preserved. There is some light surface wear to two figures on horseback. A small area of blurriness, possibly old restoration or accumulation of dirt, is in the lower right by the river, measuring approximately 3x2 cm. it does not show up in the ultraviolet light so perhaps it is a very old restoration. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows an uneven old varnish and some repairs to the knocks along the margins (mentioned above). There are tiny areas of dot retouchings applied to restrengthen leaves in the foliage, particularly on the far right between the two buildings. This lot is offered in a heavy old oak frame, with some minor knocks and faded gilding of the sight edge, but structurally sound.

There are at least two other versions of this composition, both published by Bertier Sauvigny as by Grimmer. The first is signed and dated 1607, without figures in the background and with a carriage on the left instead of the group of three figures seen here. Overall the picture is paler in palette.1 A second known version, a tondo, is signed and dated 1606. It shows two horses in the foreground, a carriage far left, and is part of a series of the twelve months.2 The heavier modelling is closer to this picture.
