Zitan is one of the most highly prized woods in China due to its rarity. According to Gerard Tsang and Hugh Moss in Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Fung Ping Shan Museum, Hong Kong, 1986, p. 198, "zitan imported during the Qing dynasty was thin, not exceeding the width that could be grasped in two palms, and the wood twisting and not straight". Expertly carved following the natural shape and grain of the wood, the artisan has cleverly carved an elegant brushpot.

The simple and naturalistic carving exhibited on this brushpot, the lustrous purplish-black patina, and its compact proportions would have highly appealed to the literati aesthetic, who prized refinement and restraint.
