For Malaysian-born painter Latiff Mohidin, the exploration of the relationship between man and nature has been a consistent theme which he pursued throughout his artistic career. This is unsurprising, considering that he grew up close to nature in the kampong (Malay village), and his later association with the Anak Alam art collective. In Blue Abstract, the artist employs organic forms and colours resembling water and earth, evoking a sense of spirit that mirrors both the calmness and vitality of nature.
As one of the most revered modern Malaysian artists today, Latiff Mohidin’s highly unique approach to abstraction has greatly influenced the succeeding generations of artists. Moreover, his ability to capture particular experiences or sentiments of the everday reflects his talent to see beauty in the mundane.
