而1940年代是陳蔭羆藝術生涯的第一個高峰期，也是他認真學習西方繪畫技巧的時期。在此階段，藝術家創作了大量的寫實肖像作品，尤其關注社會小人物形象的描繪，這些作品在40年代廣泛地受到美國藝壇的認可。1942年的〈洛杉磯先鋒快報〉曾如此讚美藝術家的肖像作品：「陳蔭羆為第一位華裔藝術家獲邀在洛杉磯博物館舉辦個展，陳氏的作品表現了他自己的語言，畫家如果沒有滿腔的熱情，不可能創造這樣的藝術作品，無論在創意、色彩等各方面表現，都屬創造。」《芮妮女士肖像》（拍品編號5074）創作於1940年代，為原藏家直接得自藝術家。畫中的主角直視觀者，眼神充滿感情，表情似乎陷入沉思，深色的背景和模特兒鮮黃的上衣、紅艷的嘴唇產生對比和衝突，洋溢著人文主義色彩的畫境充分顯示了陳蔭羆當年的造型能力和藝術水平，以及對生命敏銳的感觸和深刻的了解。

在1965至1975年間，陳蔭羆曾先後應邀在奧蒂斯藝術學院藝廊（Otis Art Institute Gallery）、洛杉磯安克洛姆畫廊（Ankrum Gallery）、加州帕撒迪納美術館（Pasadena Art Museum）和芝加哥藝術學院（Chicago Art Institute）舉辦個展，足見其身為一個華人藝術家以其獨特的藝術語彙在西方藝術世界所受到肯定，此無疑亦展現出了他特出的藝術成就。
