在此以大紅為主色的直幅畫布上,藝術家以墨黑的筆刷大刀闊斧地用以多轉折的筆觸線條架構出畫作的主旋律,大起伏的動勢使線條展現多層次的變化,線面縱橫交錯,充滿靈活輕盈感。他用鮮明的鵝黃、藍、白色塊來敲奏出高低起伏、節奏鮮明的音律,在色彩的冷暖、濃淡、下筆力道的強弱、線條的粗細變化中,藝術家將氣象萬千的自然凝縮於筆下世界,看似隨意的形色組合中,一切都自有其深意,複雜的繪畫元素在衝突中共生,激盪出生命的光彩,而這一切都掌握在藝術家的手裡。如朱德群所言:「在我的畫面上,色彩和線條從不是偶然的,它們和諧地達到同一目的:啟動光源,喚起形象和韻律。」
觀者的目光跟著畫中蜿蜒起伏的線條逡巡而上,當中閃耀的白色光源若晨曦引領他們一重又一重地深入其間,彷彿讓人遁入唐代詩人杜牧在《山行》中所描繪的詩境:「遠上寒山石徑斜,白雲深處有人家。停車坐愛楓林晚,霜葉紅於二月花」。杜牧的詩充分表達了登山時大自然給他的重重喜悅,在登上高處時眼見時逢傍晚,夕陽餘暉下楓葉如丹,層林如染,滿山雲錦比江南二月的春花還要火紅、還要艷麗,讓他流連忘返,而此與《No. 549》一作的畫境亦相映成趣。作品中央的深色油彩彷彿左右高低不齊的重山峻嶺,壯闊雄偉,純白的光源從山巒間透出,構成了畫面的立體感和層次感,彷彿重現了宋代畫家李唐《萬壑松風圖》中的奇峰險峻。朱德群好友吳冠中曾言:「德群的作品處處追求力度,他痛痛快快用大黑塊及或粗或細的黑線來抒發胸中豪氣,水墨畫的濃郁的黑、流暢的線都湧進了他的油畫。中國傳統藝術中的大寫意、狂草、隨方就圓的處理手法都哺育了他。」正如宋代畫家於作品中追求的精神內涵,《No. 549》深刻反映朱德群胸中的萬千氣魄,誠如他自己所言,他喜愛在大自然中聆聽宇宙、聆聽東方、聆聽西方,將自己的靈感泉源賦予詩情和詩意,使觀者被其作品中所蘊含的沉思和冥想所感動。
