The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This canvas has an old lining, but the paint layer may have been cleaned more recently. The paint layer has weakened over time because of abrasion, and there is quite noticeable canvas grain visible in the sky, much of which has been retouched. The retouches are very broad and aimless. Although there is weakness and restoration in the façade of the church, there is no reason why this picture should not be cleaned again, with a view to retouching in a much more accurate fashion, which would be immensely beneficial.
