This refined Baroque crucifix for an altar once belonged to a member of the House of Pignatelli, a prominent noble family with branches in Naples and Spain. Numerous family members served as viceroys, generals, and ministers of the Crown, the most well known of which is Antonio Pignatelli (1615-1700), later Pope Innocent XII, who was famous for his battle against nepotism among his cardinals.
