Condition
On uncradled panel which is set into an engaged frame. The panel is flat and stable. Overall there is very good retention of the paint surface with very nice preservation of detail especially in the crown of thorns and hair. Examination under UV light reveals numerous scattered small retouches to the flesh tones of face and neck, a few on red robe and a few in hair. These have been well applied and the painting is presentable and can be hung as is. There are one or two nick to the engaged frame.

拍品資料及來源
Christ Crowned with Thorns is one of a number of subjects depicting Christ's suffering frequently treated by Bouts and his workshop. Bouts's prototype for the present composition is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon (inv. no. D. 1948-1-P), though it, in turn, may be based on a lost composition by Hugo van der Goes. When she included the present work in her catalogue raisonné of Bouts (see Literature), Valentine Henderiks had not seen the picture itself, but now after first hand inspection, she has confirmed the attribution to the workshop of Albrecht Bouts.
