Condition

The panel is uncradled. There is central horizontal wood slat affixed to the reverse. A central vertical join runs from the rocks at top down through the arm of the saint and into his drapery. This is visible to the naked eye from the front. There are a couple of tiny losses along the join in the upper half. Overall there is very good preservation of the paint surface with nice impasto. Detail is well retained and colors are strong. Under UV examination: there are two small retouches at right side of torso and another larger retouch at bottom center edge. Otherwise nothing else fluoresces, but the painting is under a thick, old varnish which is difficult to read through.

This depiction of St. Jerome in Penitence is by an artist working in Antwerp who was clearly familiar with the work of his contemporaries Jan van Hemessen and the Master of the Lille Adoration, to whom the work was previously ascribed. St. Jerome's elongated bald head and arms and his crowded facial features are reminiscent of the latter's work, however the handling of the anatomy in its dark modeling and exaggerated musculature lean more to artists in van Hemessen's circle. It is an unusual interpretation of St. Jerome in the wilderness, depicting him offering he rock directly to the figure of Christ on the crucifix.
