中國史書記載，秦始皇滅六國統一中國後製傳國玉璽，命丞相李斯書《受命於天，既壽永昌》八字篆書，刻於其上。之後，從漢至清，歷朝歷代的統治者都希望得到這個像徵天命皇權的玉璽。據說，唐宋兩代的皇帝都曾製作過「受命璽」。但迄今為止，受命璽的實物卻很少顯世。現存於北京故宮博物院的清朝的漢滿文《大清受命之寶》玉璽乃為乾隆皇帝時重刻。

此枚《皇唐受命之寶》璽， 交龍鈕厚實勁健，渾身無鱗，有元明玉雕風格；印文為筆劃圓潤兩端尖細的「柳葉篆」，亦常見於明代官印。恐為明代時人偽托「皇唐之命」而刻。
