百達翡麗於2004年巴塞爾鐘錶展推出5970型號，取代錶徑較小的3970型號。5970型號錶肩設計棱角分明，配以方形計時按鈕，外形上更貼近早期的2499型號。此錶款發行時僅推出白金版本，粉紅金版本則於翌年推出，惟品牌發行鉑金鑲鑽石的5971型號後，兩款5970型號金屬款均於2007年停產。在2008年的巴塞爾鐘錶展中，百達翡麗再接再厲，推出萬眾矚目的黃金版本5970型號，惜生產僅一年即告停產，而2009年發行的鉑金錶款亦於一年後宣佈停產。

此型號為回應市場對複雜錶款的需求而推出，為品牌最備受推崇的錶款，等候名單上的買家多不勝數，在公開市場價格亦屢創新高。Philippe Stern於2009年卸任百達翡麗總裁，同年品牌推出此型號壓軸之作鉑金錶款，繼續傳承與延續百達翡麗的經典傳奇。
