  • ZITAN WOOD
of rectangular outline, the three board floating top set flush within a standard mitered, mortise and tenon frame with a double-cushion-molded edge, supported on legs of circular section joined by an arched and molded stretchers, enclosing interlocked double-ring struts, the underside with four transverse stretchers

Condition

There is some slight shrinkage to the top panels, some scratches, water drop stains and expected wear. There appears to be some repaired splits to the legs. It is likely that some or all of the cash sign decorative struts have been replaced. The legs and apron are covered with a dark lacquer that is lifting in places.

拍品資料及來源

The design of the present lot is inspired by nature and archaism, the softy rounded edges imitating the bamboo or cane furniture seen in Song dynasty painting. The use of a rare and expensive hardwood in imitation of a humbler material evokes the high-minded refinement expected of a Ming scholar. Long tables such as the present form were used primarily as an ideal surface to display works of art. The present table with its literati inspired bamboo-form would likely be found in a Qing dynasty scholar's studio.
