拍品資料及來源
The carver of this piece has skilfully captured a sense of movement through the crisp carving of the fish’s scales and the tumultuous waves, enhanced by the natural dark inclusions of the stone. Compare two similar jade carvings of leaping carps sold in these rooms, the first, 21st May 1980, lot 294, and the second, 8th October 2013, lot 3315. Compare also an earlier carving of a group of leaping carps, from the Zhi Rou Zhai collection, included in the exhibition Exquisite Jade Carving, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1996, cat. no. 99, and sold in these rooms, 8th October 2008, lot 2330.
This carving captures the carp’s moment of transformation from a fish into a dragon upon swimming upstream in the Yellow River and leaping the rapids of the Dragon Gate. This theme was a popular pictorial subject as it is a metaphor for a scholar who passes the civil examinations and thus transforms into a high official.
