Condition
There are firing cracks, especially to the base, a few of which have been reinforced. The figure also has a few occasional nicks and old restoration, including a flake next to an old repaired area to the hood, as well as a few nicks to the necklace and the robe. An area to the lower edge of the robe has been polished, and there is another polished area covered with overpaint to the top corner of the pedestal.

Notable for the naturalistic modelling, as evident in the voluminous falling robes, this figure bears resemblance to a group of Dehua sculptures of Guanyin with seal marks of He Chaozong. See one included in the exhibition Blanc-de-Chine. Divine Images in Porcelain, China Institute, New York, 2002, cat. no. 25, and sold in our New York rooms, 20th March 2007, lot 770; another in the Koger collection, included in the exhibition Chinese Ceramics in the Koger Collection, The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, 1985, cat. no. 147; a third from the Robert H. Blumenfield collection, illustrated in Blanc de Chine. The Great Porcelain of Dehua, Berkeley, 2002, p. 130, fig. a; another similar figure seated on a mat by He Chaozong, illustrated by P.J. Donnelly, Blanc de Chine, The Porcelain of Tehua in Fukien, London, 1969, pl. 143B; and a further example sold at Christie’s New York, 9th November 1981, lot 237.
