The jar is in overall good condition, except for a stained star crack and another three-pronged one to the interior. There are some original firing flaws, including firing lines mostly visible only on the interior, and one along the neck, as well as minor expected surface wear and light scratches. The enamels have been generally well preserved.

代表九五之尊的黃龍，游弋於紅色的海洋，江崖海水之上，紅黃掩映，充滿祥瑞之氣，盡顯皇家御器的氣派。黃地紅釉裝飾似乎僅見於明嘉靖一朝。嘉靖年間此類釉彩裝飾紋飾深得皇帝的青睞，因黃地紅龍紋罐的燒製不下三個不同的版本，而此罐卻屬迄今為止造型最大一類，令人一見難忘。「黃上紅」釉彩套迭工藝繁複，窰燒三次方能成器。先以高溫燒瓷胎；第二次以高溫燒成黃釉器；最後以紅彩塗飾紋飾之外的地子，襯托出黃色花紋，以低溫烘烤，稍一不慎，前功盡費，不能成器。

此器通高約20公分，私人收藏未見他例，非常珍罕。多見造型稍小，約13公分高，同樣樣飾黃龍、紅地、江崖海水，但間以靈芝紋，肩飾雲紋。見一例為日本奈良市大和文華館所藏，與本器同錄於《龍泉集芳》，編號834。第三類紋飾相仿，尺寸更小（約11公分），造型更圓，見同書編號833。北京中國國家博物館藏如前例，錄《中國國家博物館館藏文物研究叢書．明代瓷器卷》，上海，2007年，圖版85；同錄一件黃地紅彩番蓮八吉祥罐，見圖版86。一帶嘉靖款黃地紅穿蓮龍紋盤，售香港佳士得1994年10月31日，編號567。

北京故宮博物院藏一件，為清宮舊藏，紋飾尺寸均與本器相似，見《故宮博物院藏文物珍品大系．雜釉彩．素三彩》 ， 上海，2009年，圖版50。另一例與本器相似，嵌金屬修復，藏景德鎮陶瓷博物館，錄於《中國陶瓷全集》，上海，1999-2000年，卷13，圖版157。一類似例，原為德國柏林近郊之阿爾佈雷希特王子宮所藏，現藏柏林亞洲藝術博物館，錄於 Beatrix von Ragué，《Ausgewählte Werke Ostasiatischer Kunst》，柏林，年1970年，編號62。Harvey Hadden 舊藏一例，現存大英博物館，錄於 Jessica Harrison-Hall，《Ming Ceramics in the British Museum》， 倫敦，2001年，圖版9: 90。另有兩例曾展於《International Exhibition of Chinese Art》， 皇家藝術學院，倫敦，1935-6年，編號1949。一件磨頸，原為瑞典斯德哥爾摩 Dr. E. Hultmark 所藏，編號1952則屬德國漢堡藝術與工藝美術博物館藏品。Eugene Fuller 舊藏一例，現存西雅圖美術館，曾展於《Dragons in Chinese Art》，美國華美協進社，紐約，1972年，圖版42。美國波士頓美術館亦藏一例，頸有損經磨，錄於《The World's Great Collections》，卷10，東京、紐約及洛杉磯，1980-82年，編號234。另見一紋飾類似例，不帶年款的較晚期作品，售於倫敦佳士得1973年6月4日，編號147。
