Condition
Automatic movement and date change in working order during the time of cataloguing. Dial has aged and developed a nice hue of brown patina. Bakelite insert show signs of use and wear, otherwise preserve in a good condition. Case with hairline scratches from wear, with even lugs retaining the chamfers. Overall in good condition. inner caseback stamped: II.1958, Movement number: 827617

When Ref. 6542, the first GMT-Master, was released in 1954, it became the official timepiece of Pan-Am Airlines. Their pilots found the watch to be a useful tool in the cockpit where many timing calculations were necessary over the duration of the flight. In addition, the simple ability to know what time it was 'back home' was very easy to see with the watch's colourful Bakelite bezel.
