《無字碑》記錄了陝西省唐高宗（649-683年）乾陵的一塊損毀石碑，與陵中其他皇室成員的墓碑截然不同，碑上竟一字未刻。此碑為武則天（625-705年）死後而立，她既是高宗皇后，更是中國史上唯一掌握君權的女皇帝。武則天無情驅逐朝中政敵，得以順利稱帝，開國號為周，終生統治天下。因前朝欠缺悼念女皇帝的先例，更由於人們不滿武則天篡位奪權，致使其墓碑一片空白。隨後歷代皆有遊人於碑上題字，包括古體契丹小字，現已模糊不清，看來似為垂直條紋；更多的雕刻亦因時代久遠，屢受侵蝕，早已難以辨認。
秋麥用心調整膠卷的微粒度，使碑文遠看下似是清晰可見，細看實為模糊難辨。從石碑的歷史來看，文字本來不曾存在，後又因時間磨滅。藝術家充分利用攝影媒介，重新呈現石碑之「無字」面貌。透過其匠心獨運，細心思量，攝影所呈現的直接觀感，使圖像反而更為雋永，更顯模稜兩可。
