王冬齡曾師從林散之（1898-1989年）學習書法，1981年畢業於中國美術學院後，他憑其形體表現及姿態抽象主義的作品，旋即成為中國最知名的現代書法家之一。在此作中，藝術家受佛教經文啟發，揮毫寫就一首七絕，緊接著又以墨覆蓋其上，畫面左方的題詞與右方深邃的墨塊形成鮮明對比，造成視覺衝擊，記錄了藝術家的創意過程，更懸於其私人工作室當中，其重要性可見一斑。王冬齡現任杭州中國美術學院現代書法研究中心主任。他的作品更於不同機構重點展出，包括北京故宮博物院、紐黑文耶魯大學美術館、紐約大都會藝術博物館及紐約古根海姆美物館。
