The floral motif is of a type made famous by the baroque-style Yuanmingyuan Palace commissioned by the Qianlong emperor. The symmetrical foliate design is particularly adaptable to dense media such as hardwood.  The most renown examples are those made of zitan an example of which is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Furniture of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, vol. II, Hong Kong, 2002, p. 245, no. 208.
