Duan stone is a type of sedimentary rock quarried from the banks of the river Duanxi, northern Guangdong Province. The stone has been highly valued since the Song Dynasty and usually used as inkstones. Panels of this size are rare. A carved stone panel of different style and later date but similar subject matter mounted as a table screen is illustrated in Emperor, Scholar, Artisan, Monk, Sydney L. Moss, Ltd., London, 1984, no. 76.
