註:「抗日戰爭期間,我們國立藝術專科學校從杭州遷到雲南,又從雲南遷到四川,中途,有幾個同學不搭車,學徐霞客的樣,徒步走上雲貴高原。他們走進玉龍山,路上李霖燦同學給我寄來明信片,一面描寫見聞,另一面是用鋼筆畫的玉龍山速寫,真叫人羡慕,遺憾未能跟著去。從此,我一直嚮往玉龍山,她深深印在我的腦子裡。一九七八年我到昆明,便專程去訪玉龍。……」─ 吳冠中〈夜縛玉龍〉
畫家在「崎嶇千里訪玉龍」之旅後,就將嚮往三十餘載之玉龍山風光納入畫中,自一九七九年以降,環繞此題材之作品屢現筆下,尺幅較大者,乃狀玉龍雪山全貌,長線條勾其輪廓,大片留白呈其體形,峰巒綿延起伏,氣勢磅礡。尺幅較小者,則俯瞰麗江古城,房舍毗鄰緊接,遠景正是玉龍蓋頂。
本幅則捨喧鬧城鎮,取景叢林一角,圖中參天樹木密集相連,如封似閉,形成一堵樹牆,細水從縫隙中迸裂而出,穿越前方體積大小不一之石塊,滙成湍流,此正是遠方皚白玉龍雪山瀉下之飛瀑。畫家一九七八年初寫玉龍,亦是由此構圖入手。若與當年之〈玉龍山下瀑〉相比,本幅即循簡臻繁,精益求精,無論佈局層次之緊密、色彩運用之豐富多變,點、線、面之交織互動,在他處理相同題材上,見同曲異工之妙,畢竟乃一九八六年筆底重現矣!
