Condition

The work is on its original canvas. The surface is intact, with stabilized drying cracks and no paint lifting. A few areas of retouching are visible under ultraviolet light: there are short thin lines of retouching in the yellow area near the upper left edge, in the area to the immediate right of the centre, in the area near the middle right edge, and in the red area in the lower right quadrant; there is an area with scattered patches of retouching to the immediate upper right of the centre; there is a small patch of retouching, measuring 3 by 3cm, located 10cm from the left edge and 30cm from the bottom; there are 5 small dots of retouching and 3 short lines of retouching (measuring respectively 3cm, 2cm and 2cm in length) along the top edge; there is a horizontal line of retouching, measuring 2cm in length, located about 16cm from the top edge and 36cm from the right edge; there are 3 dots of retouching along the edges near the lower left corner. The work is framed.

「朱德群的畫作對我而言是精神思緒之謎,它是展現移影幻象的劇場,從不顯露半點秘密。畫像引領觀者進入永恆無盡的異鄉,卻保留了難以捉摸而無可改變的現狀。」──皮耶‧雷斯塔尼(「朱德群之境」,〈朱德群〉,恩里科‧納瓦拉畫廊,巴黎,2000年,頁9)

朱德群於七十年代所創的三幅非凡傑作《秋色》(拍品編號10)、《夏》(拍品編號15)及無題(拍品編號11),在同一家族收藏中保存超過三十年,現於是次拍賣重新面世,更是藝術家當年革新創作的有力見證。藝術家於七十年代與其師林風眠在巴黎重聚,同期更參觀阿姆斯特丹的倫勃朗回顧展,並作詳盡紀錄,他亦赴德國觀賞表現主義繪畫作品。藝術家置身於兩種文化的交匯處,透過自信及超卓的抽象創作語彙,與對大自然及其微妙變化的細緻觀察,創作出更加精煉的傑作。藝評家高天民談及朱德群的創作轉變時,認為「從七十年代之後,朱德群的自然觀開始發生了根本的變化,自然已逐步幻化為他際遇未來的『內象』或『心象』,而非『對象』。」

朱德群自五十年代於巴黎開始投入抽象派創作,當時正值斑點派興起之時,也是他探索尼古拉‧德‧斯塔埃爾作品的階段。藝術家持續不斷地研習中國書法藝術,因而其六十年代的畫作中,呈現出強而有力的線條,並置的色彩更見生動強烈。「銳利的線條與空曠的筆法形成對比、書法的精神與暈染的技巧互相對照,是藝術家整個六十年代內作品的特點,直至他隨後十年在其抽象風景畫作中呈現出『可變空間』的特質」(同上,頁13)。藝術家對東方的無盡回憶中蘊藏了廣闊的動力,與這一特質一起,成為了解其抽象作品的關鍵之處。

《秋色》(拍品編號10)於1976年創作,保留了朱德群狂放雄渾的書法筆勢,構圖亦更見輕柔,畫面紋理雕琢變化較少。藝術家運用鮮黃艷紅的寬廣筆觸創作中心的構圖,頓時令觀者目不轉睛,飛馳於藝術家創造的幻境之中。溫暖的中心在四周的黑墨與橄欖色調環環包圍下依然豔麗,毫不失色。頂端層層疊疊的油彩則時而稀疏,顯露出底層閃爍的色彩。正如畫題所示,本作的色調令人聯想起樹梢間絢爛的秋葉,或是落葉隨秋風紛飛的景色。然而,生氣盎然的構圖與精緻的漸變色彩,卻又化解了一切現實的幻想。畫作的空間與寬度變化恆常,可任意看成萬種秋色,既可微觀,也可宏觀,萃取秋之精髓,呈現詩意豐姿。

創作於1977年的《夏》(拍品編號15)則蘊藏了夏日景色的千姿百態,卻又包含一些難以理解的夏季想像。畫中運用翡翠與湖綠、蔚藍與奶黄,各種色調使夏日姿彩表露無遺。中心的粉紅塗層尤為豔麗奪目,令人聯想起晚春花卉的飄落花瓣,或是碧波上一朵含苞待放的孤傲蓮花。然而,細密精緻、層層疊疊的藍色點綴下,各式各樣的暈染與筆觸構圖否定了任何對具體空間或標誌的想像,只留下光線帶來的印象。

由此可見,「道」正是藝術家在上述作品致力追求的要素。藝評家龍柏(Jean-Clarence Lambert)形容朱德群是「火一般的畫家──屬於大氣和火,而與此同時,帶著某種不可名狀的神秘元素,這種個人魅力使他在巴黎畫派之中獨樹一幟」。本作呈現的圖像猶如生命之焰,蘊含老子在〈道德經〉所言宇宙之源的圓玄奧秘之道。它們在光線與色彩的交織下,展現準繩細緻的韻律節奏,藝術家的創作神髓更在充沛空間上游弋漫溯,時而悠遊,時而急促,開拓出一片縱深高遠的新天地,周遭事物彷彿在漫長黑夜之後,隨著光明而甦醒。
