Cet ouvrage commémoratif, composé un an après la mort de Gautier sur une proposition de Catulle Mendès et Albert Glatigny, s’ouvre sur le poème de Victor Hugo "A Théophile Gautier" et contient en édition originale le célèbre "Toast funèbre" de Mallarmé (p. 109).
