「城市山水畫」風格取源宋山水靈韻，將古人崇尚自然的傳統精髓融入二十世紀的現代都市面貌。在徐建國的作品中，摩天大樓巍立綿綿如山嶺，公路車道蜿蜒穿插其中，儼如山間流水。他筆下的水泥鋼筋建築散發出寧和安詳的氣氛，竟不見冷削錚銳的面目。徐氏並非純粹以現代建築取代自然風貌而自成一格。作品的氣韻往往是藝術家精神狀態的呈現——徐建國以靜觀自如之心，俯察現代都市物慾橫流的世態，將心目所見之物匯於筆墨之間，意境超然悠遠。他希望藉創「城市山水畫」新風，為中國傳統文化注入新生命元素，促成當今藝術家及觀者與古典文化的實質連繫。
徐氏自幼習學古典書畫藝術，1976年畢業於上海戲劇學院；後移居紐約，1987年獲巴德學院頒授藝術工作室碩士學位（MFA)。五十年來的水墨畫創作，載滿了他在腦海中想像和重構的城市景觀，近年可見2013年北京首都博物館舉行的《當代藝術的超越——美藉華裔畫家徐健國四十年的藝術求索》。徐建國的作品在世界各地獲多間博物館、私人機構和收藏家收藏，包括波士頓美術博物館。2013年於北京中國國家博物館舉辦的“當代藝術的超越：美籍華裔藝術家徐健國五十年的藝術求索”個人展覽。2014年於香港蘇富比藝術空間舉辦“徐健國：集粹補遺”個展。徐健國的作品被收藏於美國波士頓美術博物館和歐美亞太眾多私人美術館及藏家。
