劉煒不同時期的作品,反映著藝術家不同的心境,風景山水自一九九九年開始山水風景多次成為他的創作題材,但當中前後風格卻見不同,這全因他的創作一直與其生活分不開,他曾經表示︰「畫畫就是順著我的生活,不拘於定式,不被外界的羈絆所束縛,就是以我手畫我心。」故此,二〇〇六年後,藝術家日趨歸隱,心境開闊,其畫風亦更見成熟,其追求的東方意境日益開朗,括然淡雅。
「劉煒的風景畫在很大程度上體現了東西方文化的雙向品質,他的作品同時具備西方技法和東方元素中的人文心境,又因為兩種文化的差異而消解掉對雙方方的直接傳承關係,並展現出一種從未出現過的新藝術萌芽。」1 劉煒的〈風景〉系列是體現劉煒這種跨越東、西方藝術的精神的最佳示範。一九九九年,劉煒嘗試以純風景作為題材,風格上仍然有著〈肉系列〉畫面靡爛及粉俗、幽默及潑皮的個性,但山水題材後快在千禧年後,取得令人驚訝進步。《風景》是藝術家創作於二〇〇六年有著非常明顯中國傳統文人趣味之作,是藝術家首次真正探討中國傳統山水,渴望回歸沉靜之作。
