魏青吉是上世紀九十年代「實驗水墨」運動中年齡最小的一位藝術家，其時剛剛大學畢業。當年許多人對水墨在當代藝術中能走多遠，就產生了懷疑。魏青吉的作品卻讓我們看到水墨的延伸性和張力，使其繪畫語言的開放性，國際性得到認可。他的水墨作品同其他「實驗水墨」藝術家不同的是，一直不排斥具象的描繪，並把這些具象描繪形成其語言符號，這些看似熟絡於我們生活中物象，形成了當下文化象徵意義的符號在他作品中體現出魅力，這也是解讀其作品的重要路徑。他們多曖昧、多調侃，甚至冷靜。魏青吉不但能熟練運用水墨材料和方法，也輕鬆地將鉛筆、拓印、拼貼等手段融進其中，這也是他水墨性作品表達的獨到之處。
