The vibrantly coloured and thickly applied enamels against a bright turquoise blue ground outlined in thick gold lines on this vase recall the characteristics of cloisonné enamelled metalwork. While a number of smaller vases of this category are known, few are of similarly large size are known, all sharing the same incised and gilt six-character Qianlong seal mark to the base. Compare a related larger vase formerly in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Porcelains with Cloisonné Enamel Decoration and Famille-Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 119. Another vase of this type from the J.T. Tai Collection, was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 7th October 2010, lot 2132.
