The box is in overall good condition. There are losses to the mother-of-inlays on all four sides of the chest as on the cover. There are minor losses to the black lacquer and wood along the edges of the box and cover both on the inside and outside of the chest. There is wear to the gilding of the hinges and lock. The chest may have been covered with a kind of brownish varnish in the past.
