It was in 1888, when Moret made his move to Pont-Aven permanent, that his style began to develop. Although influenced by Paul Gauguin’s Syntheticism at first, Moret then transitioned from broad geometric placement of colours towards the application of smaller flecks of paint more akin to the impressionist plain-air school. It is in fact with Monet’s style in mind that in 1906 Moret painted Les Glénans, Saint Nicolas, where the transparency of the water and the vibrancy of the light on the shoreline of this small island off the coast of Brittany are the artist’s main focus, demoting the figures to secondary roles within the work.
