拍品資料及來源

The song, "The Reel o' Tullochgorum," written by Reverend John Skinner (1721-1807) is the song composed by Skinner to accompany the popular Scottish tune of the same name. Skinner wrote it in order to end a political dispute about Whigs and Tories that had arisen while visiting friends in Elion. Robert Burns (1759-1796) famously declared Skinner's song as "the best Scotch song Scotland ever saw."

The song, "The Marquis of Huntly's Rell," was also written by Skinner and was set to a tune by William Marshall, who was the butler to Lord Gordon and was known to be a fine fiddler. When talking about him, Burns said "... Marshall was the first [ie best] composer of Straspeys of the age..." (Straspeys are Scottish dances in 4/4 time.)

Further, the poem illustrated on the cover of the Tea Caddy is based on Robert Burns' "Epistle to J. Lapraik, An Old Scottish Bard," which reads:

"On Fasten-e'en we had a rockin,
To ca' the crack and weave our stockin:
And there was muckle fun and jokin,
Ya need na doubt:
At length we had a hearty yokin
At sang about."

Indeed, it can be argued that this Tea Caddy was made in homage to Robert Burns.

For illustrations of the music mechanism and a description of the present lot, see Ord-Hume, A. W. J. G., The Musical Box, A Guide for Collectors, p.59, pls.6-7. "The Reel of Tullochgorum" is described ibid as a traditional Scottish air published in 1730.
