由休·史密遜爵士、即後來的諾森伯蘭第一代公爵（1715-1786年）為斯丹維克莊園（Stanwick Park）購入或訂製，約克郡；

Possibly the bookcase recorded in An Inventory of the Best Rooms Stanwick 1773 in No. 4 In your Lordships Room up Stairs and described as one mahogany Book case, this is the only reference to a bookcase in that document, although having been fitted into a recess it may have been omitted and this entry may well refer to another (The Archives of the Duke of Northumberland at Alnwick Castle DP/D1/I/132);

Stanwick Park, 1865 in The Dressing Room Adjoining [the Duchess's Bedchamber] and described as 'A fine, old, carved Bookcase the upper part *** by wire work the under part enclosed by panel'd doors with carved mouldings (locked)' (Alnwick Sy.H.IX.1.O);

This impressive bookcase is in good country house condition, displaying very good colour and patina, which can be enhanced by waxing. The sides have been extended when removed from the alcove (circa 1880) where was originally placed, although there was no alteration to proportions or volume. Doors with later glass panels and replaced wire netting – originally only with netting - the doors backs with later screwed mouldings to secure glass panels; old tack marks to inside doors possibly from silk backs; backboard of central lower section grained; shelves appear to be original; lower side cupboards have later oak drawers, probably done when sides where extended; repairs to hinges to left door of central lower section, with a screw visible in the exterior; upper central door hinges probably replaced with minor losses around them; slide sections for shelves to central upper cupboard probably replaced; small losses to garlands carvings and there is a small loss to vitruvian scroll frieze to right hand side. Marks and scratches consistent with age and use.

這個書櫃應該曾是約克郡斯丹維克莊園（Stanwick Park）原本裝潢的一部分，應該與今次拍賣會上一件編號為七號的斗櫃在同一時間定製，委託人是休·史密遜爵士（Sir Hugh Smithson）；他在1739至1740年間將斯丹維克莊園重建成新帕拉第奧風格。

1730年代中，英國開始流行用書櫃加強房間的建築裝飾；而此書櫃原本被設計作為大廳的一部分，其結構造型故亦符合了這個新概念。這樣的安排符合了十八世紀英國建築及室內設計大師威廉·肯特（William Kent）的設計和規劃，而且他明顯負責了莊園大宅的總體內部設計。此前，書櫃一直被視為屋內的次要陳設，僅有實際而無裝飾作用。桃花心木在當時是一種奢侈貴重的物料，加上如此精雕細琢，必定耗費甚鉅；肯特的其它著名建築設計，例如候克漢宮（Holkham Hall）及德文郡公館（Devonshire House），宅內的藏書館書櫃亦只是採用彩繪鎏金松木。此書櫃櫃身顏色依然光鮮亮麗，保持了原來的表層；同時代的書房家具在市場上非常罕有，本品更是當中難得的精品。
