In overall good conserved condition. Exceptional quality casting and chasing of the gilt-bronze mounts. These spectacular vases would benefit from a light clean as the gilt-bronze is rubbed in places. Both with old repairs, marks, chips and minor patches and filler as visible from the catalogue photograph.

這對路易十六時期之法國連蓋甕約於1775年創作，其鑲銅鎏金部分傳為皮耶‧古鐵爾（Pierre Gouthière）（1740-1806）所製，其為十八世紀後期最優秀的雕刻及鍍金工匠。此甕的外型設計大膽新穎，大型的鎏金葉尖頂飾、兩側優雅的人面雕刻，配以自然流麗的葉片圍繞甕身，華麗動人，份量十足。古鐵爾曾為很多地位顯赫的客人製作精品，當中包括杜巴利伯爵夫人（Madame du Barry），為她的羅費斯恩大樓（Pavilion de Louveciennes）製器；另曾受僱於歐蒙公爵（Duc d`Aumont）及其女兒馬薩林公爵夫人（Duchesse de Mazarin），更為法國皇后瑪麗‧安托瓦內特效力，為她在楓丹白露宮的土耳其小廳而創作。直至1770年，他因應皇后對鑲銅大理石作品的熱愛，後成為其御用銅匠。瑪麗皇后在一次傳奇的歐蒙公爵收藏拍賣中，購入五件由古鐵爾鑲製的作品，當中包括一張藍色大理石几桌，原為馬薩林公爵夫人而製，現存於紐約之弗里克收藏，鑲嵌部分由古鐵爾製作，該同款人面雕刻與本作之設計極具關連。

本作曾為賈米‧奧提斯‧帕蒂諾（Jaime Ortiz-Patino）（1930-2013）所藏，他來自非凡卓越之收藏世家，起源自其祖父西蒙‧伊多利‧帕蒂諾（Simon Iturri Patino）（1860-1947），為一位傳奇人物，且為採礦業先鋒，曾於玻利維亞發現重大錫礦而被譽為「錫礦之王」。其藝術收藏經他的兒子安特諾‧帕蒂諾（Antenor Patino）（1894-1982）進一步擴展，其為法國路易十四大世紀鑑藏家，也是凡爾賽宮之主要贊助人。蘇富比過往曾榮獲委託拍賣帕蒂諾家族珍藏，當中包括於1986年在紐約哄動一時的十八世紀法國家具拍賣，另於1998年則呈獻一組保羅‧拉米爾（Paul de Lamerie）銀器珍品，刷新不少拍賣紀錄，成績亮麗。
