In relation to much of the better output of the Yangzhou school, everything appears linked to everything else in terms of materials, form, subject matter, compositions, style, or quality of carving. This example does not belong to the group carved in the ground colour, and it is neither as well balanced in terms of composition, nor as technically commanding as, say, Sale 5, lot 15, but it is so rich in details indicating the Yangzhou style it can be attributed to that school. It is exquisitely well made, with an impeccably controlled foot rim; the integrity of the ground plane is reasonably good, and the subject quite delightful.
The style of the chrysanthemums here is notably different from Sale 5, lot 15, but both styles coexist on Sale 4, lot 142, reassuring us that these three bottles come from a common workshop. There are a number of impressive compositional details here, each element being very well conceived and carved, even if the composition of the side bearing the quail is too busy to achieve the formal coherence of some of his other compositions.
