Condition

The board is sound. There are frame abrasions with some minor associated paint loss along the edges. There is a very fine net of cracks throughout the composition. There is a fleck of paint loss approximately 8cm to the left of the signature. There appears to be some remains of adhesive to the area of the white flowers in the bottom left. Inspection under UV does not reveal any signs of restoration. Held in a large wooden frame behind glass. Unexamined out of frame.

拍品資料及來源

Shishkin’s oil studies often provide the best insights into his experimentation with faktura. Particularly characteristic here are the upward brushstrokes of the tussocks of grass and the long thin and dry brushwork of the root systems, which he would sometimes draw with the reverse end of the paint-brush. The mint greens, the greys and faint purple hue to the sandy path are hallmarks of Shishkin’s forest scenes and Merikyul landscapes.
