拍品資料及來源

The present watercolour belongs to a series of works executed by Makovsky during his trips to Egypt in the 1870s. These proved to be very fruitful for the artist, and in 1874 he brought back more than 200 sketches and studies from his second trip alone. The streets of Cairo inspired Makovsky to one of his greatest masterpieces, The Procession of the Holy Carpet in Cairo (1876), which was acquired by the Tsar and is now in the collection of the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg.

The catalogue of Makovsky's 1897 exhibition lists two Cairo watercolours, whereas Bulgakov (1892) lists only one. Given the large quantity of works relating to Makovsky's trips to Cairo it is difficult to establish with any certainty if the present work was included in these exhibitions.
