Condition

Window mounted. Overall in good condition. Few small tears in the sheet at the upper margin and one at the lower margin. There is a tiny hole at the lower left corner, barely visible. There is an area of staining located toward the lower left section of the sheet, this is possibly due to a water stain. Medium is still strong and vibrant.

The present study and the two black chalk drawing in the following lot (96) are sheets from a sketchbook used by Robert during his Roman sejourn (1754 - 1765).  The original bound volume of drawings was once part of the illustrious De Ganay Collection (see provenance).  It is thought that this particular sketchbook was used during Robert's last years in Rome as two drawings are dated, one 1764 and one 1765.  There were over fifty sketchbooks listed at the time of the Robert Estate sale in 1809 and it is possible that the De Ganay volume was part of this group.  The majority of these sketchbooks have not remained intact, but we know of two that survive, one in the Pierpont Morgan Library and another in the Louvre.1
