Condition

a) Hinge mounted. An old crease runs horizontally across the upper half of the sheet. There are some small areas of foxing and surface dirt. Generally the medium is fresh throughout. b) Hinge mounted. There is a small light brown stain to the upper left corner and some minor rubbing in areas. Otherwise the medium is fresh throughout.

Groups of boats, brought ashore or resting in harbour, feature frequently in Saftleven's Rhine landscapes and it is possible that he used studies such as these as aids when composing his paintings. 
Another version of the first drawing offered in this lot can be found in the Musée de Beaux-Arts, Brussels1, in which the same two figures can be seen conversing on the bank, with a near identical depiction of the boat in the foreground and church spire on the horizon.
