This drawing is one of a number of designs for the final illustration in the series Cochin provided for an edition of Fébnelon's, Les Aventures de Télémaque. It was engraved by Jean-Baptiste Lucien. Cochin started work on the project in 1773 and the serialized publication began in 1776 but was abandoned in 1778. Another red chalk drawing relating to the same illustration, but in reverse to the present sheet, was recently on the Paris art market.1
