拍品資料及來源

On 6/16 April 1665, not long after the beginning of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the States-General appointed Jacob Baron van Wassenaar van Obdam commander-in-chief of the fleet that was then being assembled in the northern islands around Texel.  The various vessels recorded in the present drawing are shown at anchor between Nieuwdiep and Den Helder, not far from Texel, some days before the fleet put to sea, on 13/23 and 14/24 May (indicating, as one would expect, that the date inscribed on this drawing refers to the New Style calendar in use in the Netherlands at this time).  There is little in this tranquil scene to suggest the carnage that would ensue, early in the following month, at the Battle of Lowestoft, one of the most dramatic defeats in Dutch naval history.
