Hinge mounted. Some minor surface dirt, otherwise in good condition with the medium fresh throughout. Sold in a modern giltwood frame.

It seems probable that the present sheet was one of a number of preparatory studies executed by Ingres for the figure of Antiochus in his painting, Antiochus and Stratonice (Fig.1), known in four versions.1 Depicted lying on his back, his head resting limply on a pillow while his left arm lies by his side, this work relates most closely to another study2 thought to represent the love-sick son of Seleucus, King of Syria, one of a number of the studies for this composition now in the collection of the Musée de Montauban.
