It seems probable that the present sheet was one of a number of preparatory studies executed by Ingres for the figure of Antiochus in his painting, Antiochus and Stratonice (Fig.1), known in four versions.¹  Depicted lying on his back, his head resting limply on a pillow while his left arm lies by his side, this work relates most closely to another study² thought to represent the love-sick son of Seleucus, King of Syria, one of a number of the studies for this composition now in the collection of the Musée de Montauban.
