Condition

Hinge mounted.There are some minor undulations to the edges of the sheet due to the way it is currently hinged to the mount. There is some minor discoloration and surface dirt to the edges of the sheet and two old creases to the left of the sitters face. Otherwise in good condition with the medium fresh throughout. Sold in a modern giltwood frame.

Madame Joseph Balze, née Marie-Anne-Adélaïde Samat, was married to the Lord Chamberlain to King Charles IV of Spain, and resided in Rome. Following the fall of the French Empire her husband helped Ingres find a number of important commissions in their home city, leading to a life long friendship with the artist.
