Condition

The work is in good condition overall, as is the canvas, which is clear and taut. There is light wear and handling around the edges of the work, but impastos are healthy and in-tact. Upon close observation, there is minor evidence of faint craquelures predominantly on the thicker impastos such as the red paints of the sun and the yellow paints on the boat. Examination under ultraviolet light shows no sign of restoration. Framed.

拍品資料及來源

The space in depth is built by sudden syncopated interruptions, broken and vibrating lines which change people and things (men, trees, boats, land, sea, etc.) into the same pictorial material.  The stylistic coherence compels everything to vibrate with the same energy be it the hard matter of the rocks, or the water, or even the air.”

Flavio De Aquino, Affandi: Exposicao Restrospectiva 1940 – 1966, Exhibition Catalogue, Museu De Arte Moderna De San Paolo, 3 – 22 May 1966

The sun is a recurring motif in Affandi’s paintings. For the artist, the sun is his artistic inspiration and also the ultimate source of life and energy. The magnificent sun occupying the center is radiating with intense heat and energy, metaphorically described by the brilliance of yellow, orange and red hues. The resulting picture is one that is overflowing with euphoria.

The traditional Balinese fishing boat is executed with great vitality. The fluid, expressionistic brushwork communicates the celebratory spirit emanating from the boat. The vessel itself even resembles the shape of a fish, with its head tilting upwards and its mouth wide opened. Full of spontaneity; as though it is about to flap its tail and swiftly swim away. Painting straight from the tubes, Affandi carves out a specific moment in time and marks the canvas with the immediate rawness associated with his style. A Boat on a Beach, Bali therefore exemplifies the creative spirit of Affandi, while offering us a glimpse into his philosophy as an artist. Signing off with the symbol of a sun next to his signature, Affandi stamps a mark of satisfaction on the completed work.
