In Modern Love, Andres Barrioquinto celebrates the present human condition; he pays tribute to the elder generation for their willingness to accept and embrace changes in today’s world. Technology at the current moment has dramatically altered the traditional notion of play and entertainment. Access to online gaming and the Internet has rendered physical interactions secondary, resulting in a life that is drastically different from the old regime. However, despite the growing generation gap, the immensely supportive role of the family is monumentalized within the present painting.  

The shock experienced by the central character in red mask signifies the elder generation in coming to terms with the totally new upbringing of their children. Barrioquinto however paints the scene in warm inviting hues to symbolize the tremendous love that persists. The abundance of colorful flowers in the background represents the surge of hope for a bright and promising future. The girl wearing a pair of kaleidoscopic shades, perhaps embodying the younger generation, is cheerful and curious. With the vast amount of information made available by technologies, she is growing to become swift and cunning, just like the fox standing on her shoulder.
