Within the context of contemporary Thai art, Abstract Expressionism has gained fresh momentum amidst existing paradigms. Artists are challenging the notion that creative modes of expression must adhere to figurative narratives. One Thai painter whose oeuvre is a welcoming divorce from such ideology is Maymay Jumsai na Ayudhaya, with her works touching upon the human psyche. The present work entitled 8883Violet inspires viewers to weave their own interpretations from the dream-like composition.

Symmetry brings to mind a forced structure. However, in creating my art, symmetry gives me the opportunity to push and pull my thoughts simultaneously away from the rigid”, the artist said. “The lines, forms, and textures of [the] compositions push the imagination, allowing the mind to wonder. Although [the painting may be] read…as a whole, the texture creates lines that form abstract images, interrupting the perspective of a single image”.

As a Thai-Chinese artist who grew up largely in the West, Maymay’s body of works are not governed by traditional Thai aesthetics or concepts. Absent of what is locally referred to as ‘Thai-ness”, 8883Violet does not adhere to one cultural framework. Thereby this provides the audience with a fresh platform on which to reevaluate the painting. Essentially a re-analysis of creative expression, the work entices a dialogue that persuades the audience to look within themselves for the answers. This is a deliberate ploy from the artist, for by stimulating cognitive perception the painting experiments with the boundaries of multi-cultural recognition.

History always repeats itself, and we cannot move forward to the future without [acknowledging] the past. I often find myself looking at cultures form a different perspective. I see the paintings as a visual language that carry meanings, so words [are no longer] a necessary tool”, she said. 8883Violet is ultimately a marriage of shape and form that has given birth to an object of contemplation.
