Condition
Rubies of Burmese origin cannot be imported into the US. This piece contains a ruby of Burmese origin and therefore cannot be imported into the US. Please contact the jewellery department for further information or see our Important Notices.
Accompanied by Gübelin report no. 1003105 and SSEF report no. 74442, each stating that the ruby is of Burmese origin, with no indications of heating, together with an appendix from the SSEF expressing the rarity of this stone.
Stamped PT 900 for platinum. For further information on the ruby weighing 12.46 carats, measuring 15.78 x 12.34 x 6.01 mm, please refer to the report; with typical crystal inclusions, some surface reaching, few nicks. Diamonds estimated to weigh a total of approximately 3.50 carat, F-G colour, VS-SI clarity. Signs of little wear to the metal. In good condition. Gross weight approximately 10 grams.

緬甸曼德勒東北方向90英里的地方,有一個叫做抹谷的地區,無疑是世界最重要的紅寶石產區。
抹谷區長約20英里,海拔4000英尺,出產高品質紅寶石,緬甸因此而舉世聞名。
最上等品質的緬甸紅寶石呈現及濃郁飽和的紅色。
大部分紅寶石出產於河床衝擊层中的結晶灰岩與大理石。
抹谷地區何時開始開採礦石,已經無從可考,但周圍地區已經出土了史前工具。
早期紀錄顯示,緬甸國王於1597年下令保護抹谷礦區,使其免遭當地撣族統治。
開採礦物十分艱苦,直至1780年時,人們不得不使用奴隸來補充當地人手。
一旦開採出貴重罕有的大型寶石,將被自動上交給國王,開採工人則得不到任何獎勵。
新上任的地方官員更對開採出的寶石徵收重稅,令工人的生存狀況愈發艱難。
統治者懷疑開採工人將大型紅寶石擊碎,可能是歷史上大型紅寶石極其稀有的原因之一。
當然,也有可能是現實中,大型寶石的存在機率本就微乎其微。
直至1886年,在政治與經濟的雙重因素影響之下,英國將上緬甸併入英屬印度。
此後幾年間,英國政府將開礦權交給龐德街珠寶商Edwin Streeter,其成立了Burma Ruby Mines Ltd.。英國人將較為先進的開礦方法帶入緬甸,結果卻不盡如人意。
1931年時,開礦結束,抹谷地區被交還於當地工人,他們仍然使用幾百年前流傳下來的古老開礦方法工作。
