By tradition from the collection of Princess Augusta of Bavaria (1788-1851), Duchess of Leuchtenberg, wife of Eugène de Beauharnais (1781-1824), Viceroy of Italy, son of Empress Joséphine of France and adopted son of Napoleon I.

Condition

Accompanied by a letter of authentication from Aug. Seiller Fils, 3 Rue du Lac, Vevey, Switzerland, dated 3 August 1932, stating that the jewel belonged to Princess Augusta Amalia of Leuchtenberg, and that it was inherited from her mother [in-law] the Empress Joséphine; and by an insurance estimate from Olsen & Ebann, Chicago 4, Illinois, dated 17 December 1956, stating that this jewel was reputedly owned and worn by Joséphine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. Mounted in silver and yellow gold. Total diamond weight stated to be approximately 23 carats, on average G-J colour, VS-SI clarity. Signs of normal wear to the metal, scratches consistent with use. Well preserved and in good condition. Gross weight approximately 40 grams.
