The title of the brocade wrapper has minor age damage, with minor loss to detail. There are age cracks, water/humidity mould stains throughout, particularly at the colophon. As visible in the catalogue photo, these stains are particularly prominent at the top of the silk, above the characters. There are cracks and losses to the surface where the calligraphy has been rubbed. The most severe area is visible in the final photo, obscuring characters in several columns of calligraphy.

祝允明（1460-1526），字希哲。右手生而有枝指，故自號枝山，又號枝指生。弘治五年（1492）中舉，然久試未第，仕途坎凛。正德年間先後廣東興寧縣知縣、應天府通判，出仕數年即還鄉，致心詩文。覽群書，能詩文，工書法，海內頗具名聲，求文者眾。擅真、行、草各體，狂草尤佳，小楷亦優。書法初學晉唐之風，又取諸家之長，卻不失個人率性。別於時人，鼓勵遵古，倡「沿晉游唐，守而勿失」。時與徐禎卿（1479-1511）、唐寅（1470-1524）、文徵明（1470-1524）齊名，並稱「吳中四才子」。著有詩文集六十卷，雜著逾百。

晉代著名詩家陶淵明（約365-427）嘗作飲酒詩二十首，後世文人崇慕不已，遂作詩倚和。宋詩人蘇軾（1037-1101）尤好之，擅以其韻寫作，所賦和詩逾百，其弟蘇轍（1039-1112）也書有和陶詩近半百。允明曾寫道：「僕本拙訥，繆干時名。兩年之間，三謁京國，遊趣既勌，風埃黯然。舟中有二蘇和陶詩，夜燈獨酌，讀其飲酒二十篇不勝悵慨，聊復倚和」，詳見《毫端萬象：祝允明書法特展》，國立故宮博物院，台北，2013年，編號22。弘治十二年（1499），時允明剛滿四十，偶讀蘇軾、蘇轍二人和陶詩，感慨不已，遂作詩二十首倚和，自覺得意，往後多番抄寫。本卷便以草書當中十一首。全卷用筆輕鬆自如，沉著痛快，跌宕縱逸，姿態多變。據題識，悉本品應書於詩成後不久，相信不出一兩年間。祝氏其他和陶詩法書，可參考台北故宮博物院藏嘉靖四年（1525）小楷章草〈和陶飲酒詩〉冊，出處同上，或見《書道全集》所載之大草〈和陶飲酒詩二十首〉卷，卷17：中國12．元、明，東京，1967年，頁74-75、174。

題識中提及「九疇」，或與嘉靖四年（1525）向允明索書〈謝莊月賦〉者為同一人。枝山於草書〈月賦〉後題「九疇酒次鋪未經牋索書，爛熳為此。試莊氏筆甚佳，然而舊箋有盡書學止此矣，九疇漫印」，可知九疇宴飲間向允明求字，法帖錄於《毫端萬象：祝允明書法特展》，上述出處，編號59。

此卷應曾為程正揆（1604-1676）所藏。程氏初名正葵，清初改名正揆，字端伯，號鞠陵，別號青溪道人、青溪老人、青溪舊史。崇禎四年（1631）進士，先後任工部侍郎、翰林院編修、尚寶司卿。入清，授工部右侍郎，棄官後遷居南京，工書畫詩文，擅山水、精楷行。
