The title of the brocade wrapper has minor age damage, with minor loss to detail. As visible in the catalogue photo, there is rubbing to the calligraphy, with loss to several of the characters and to the seal mark on the top right of the first photo. There are also water/humidity mould stains to the painting, particularly acute in the area where two of the fragments are linked together. It is possible that there are several missing columns of calligraphy, possibly where the hand scroll was folded and damaged. Other blurring to area of the calligraphy from the mounting process. The calligraphy is slightly cut short at the bottom, where it was cut and mounted. Minor tears to the mount, particularly at the mounts.

全卷草書沈周〈為郭總兵題長江萬里圖〉詩，一氣呵成，剛勁有度，瀟灑疏朗，奔放自如，與詩文宏壯廣遠之意境相互呼應，盡展書家筆墨修為。

李東陽（1447-1516），字賓之，號西涯，諡文正，明朝中葉著名文士，立朝五十載，為文典雅，精於鑑賞，以書法稱世。西涯書法早獲人識，幼年已屢次參見景泰帝，於御前獻技。初學顏真卿，盡得其神，又別樹一格，尤精大草，時人稱嘆謂「中古絕技也」，兼工篆隸古文，多為內閣揮毫寫疏草。天順八年（1464）進士，歷任太常寺少卿、禮部右侍郎等職，官至太子太保、禮部尚書兼文淵閣大學士，有賢相之譽。孝宗駕崩，李東陽獲委以治國重任，擔當顧命大臣。正德帝即位後，進少傅兼太子太傅、吏部尚書，但見宦官亂政、武宗荒淫，意興闌珊，遂辭官。

原詩乃沈周（1427-1509）為〈長江萬里圖〉所題，收錄於錢謙益（1582-1664）所輯《列朝詩集》，〈丙集第八．石田先生沈周一百六十八首〉。據文徵明題沈周〈溪山長卷〉，指弘治乙酉（1489）徵明於雙蛾僧舍謁見沈周，時周正作〈長江萬里圖〉，徵明歆羨之。若該畫正乃此詩目所指者，沈周作詩年份應與圖卷相約，則西涯於沈周為郭總兵題詩約七年後，復以草書題此詩。

東陽草書後有二跋，其一書東陽生平，署名潘兆杏，鈐印，時乾隆二十六年（1761）。惜潘氏兆杏，史書無載，生平不詳。

觀「魏氏溫雲珍藏」等印，悉本卷晚清時嘗入魏綸先雅蓄。魏綸先，晚清衡陽人，字溫雲，生卒不詳。據錄，精於洋務，曾入李鴻章（1823-1901）幕下。

成沂（約1833-72）為本卷書跋及題籤，據此可知此卷於魏綸先藏蓄時，嘗請沂題字。成沂，字止青，晚號古頑，工書法，兼山水，富收藏。書法初師何紹基，後摹晉魏篆隸，且學鄧完白。
