The 'four joys' refer to honor, longevity, prosperity and happiness. They also refer to the joy of rain after a drought, which was very important to an agrarian society, the joy of meeting someone from your hometown in a strange land, the joy of the wedding chamber, and the joy of passing the imperial examinations. Similar plaques dated 18th century have been sold at Christie's New York, 22nd and 23rd March 2012, lot 1927; Christie's Hong Kong, 28th November 2012, lot 2402; and in these rooms, 14th September 2011, lot 260.
