The continuous yokeback armchair is considered one of the classic forms originating in the Ming dynasty.  No dated examples are known but two miniature examples of the type were excavated from the tomb of Pan Yunzheng (1589).  The flowing lines are less imposing than the extended rail type conveying a bit more informality. The popularity of the form ensured its production in varying forms through the late Ming and throughout most of the Qing dynasty. A similar pair with square members was sold Christie's Hong Kong, 1st December 2009, lot 1933.
